June 14: The exhibition, “KAGIROHI”- Morning Twilight by Kota Nakamura, has just started on June 13 at Mizoe Gallery in Denenchofu. I unexpectedly joined the workshop on June 14, conducted by the artist, and about five or six people attended. It was a brainstorming session in which the artist asked us to write down any word that came to mind, such as “dream” or “mysterious experience”. Then we drew our dream on a small piece of paper. I joined the session midway, so I missed the first part. Probably the artist intended to show us how the imagination or any idea transforms into art. It was a fun experience.

Kota Nakamura is a contemporary artist active in Japan and studied art mostly in the USA. He witnessed the collapse of the WTC up close in NY. That experience is reflected in his works.

“KAGIROHI” means morning twilight that twinkles in the eastern sky in the early morning in winter. He finds a sort of transience in it. At dawn, there is a moment when lives and cells awaken and begin to shine. A strength of life and a relief created by the collision or blending of materials resonate with space and time. Ambivalence is one of his themes.

I was most impressed with the works displayed in the Japanese room – glass works with bullet holes and hanging scrolls. They perfectly fit into the Japanese setting.
